About Primary English Grammar
Strong grammar skills are the foundation of effective communication in English. For primary school students aged 6 to 12, building a solid understanding of grammar rules helps them write more clearly, read with better comprehension, and express their ideas with confidence. These free resources cover the essential grammar topics that every primary school student should master.
In the early grades (Grade 1 and Grade 2), children learn the building blocks of English grammar. They discover how nouns name people, places, and things, how verbs describe actions, and how adjectives add detail to descriptions. Simple sentence construction, basic punctuation, and the concept of singular and plural forms are introduced through clear explanations and hands-on practice.
As students move into Grade 3 and Grade 4, grammar instruction deepens. They learn to use different tenses to express when things happen, understand how conjunctions connect ideas, and begin working with more complex sentence structures. Topics like subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, and pronouns become central to their writing and comprehension development.
In the upper primary years (Grade 5 and Grade 6), students refine their grammar knowledge to prepare for secondary school. Advanced topics include conditional sentences, reported speech, passive voice, relative clauses, and the nuances of formal versus informal language. At this stage, understanding why a grammar rule works is just as important as knowing what the rule is, which is why our lessons provide detailed explanations alongside practice opportunities.
All topics are aligned with the Singapore MOE Syllabus and suitable for students following an international English curriculum.
