Action Verbs (P2) (Primary 2)

More action verbs; choosing the right verb for the context

Action Verbs

Action verbs are words that tell us what someone or something does. They show actions you can see or do.

What You'll Learn

  • More action verbs beyond basic ones like run, jump, and eat
  • How to choose the right action verb for the sentence
  • How different action verbs can change the meaning of a sentence

When to Use

  1. Telling what a person does: "The boy kicks the ball."
  2. Telling what an animal does: "The bird flies to the tree."
  3. Telling what happens to something: "Mum stirs the soup."
  4. Telling how someone moves: "The baby crawls on the floor."

How to Form

What is an action verb?

An action verb tells us what someone or something does. You already know simple action verbs like run, jump, eat, and play. Now you will learn more action verbs and how to pick the best one.

Common Action Verbs by Group

GroupAction VerbsExample Sentence
Handsgrab, hold, carry, throw, catch, pourShe carries the books to class.
Mouthchew, bite, sip, blow, whistle, lickHe sips his water slowly.
Bodyclimb, crawl, stretch, bend, skip, marchThe children march in a line.
Eyesstare, peek, search, spot, watchShe peeks behind the door.
Soundshout, whisper, clap, knock, bangHe whispers the answer to his friend.

Choosing the Right Verb

Sometimes many verbs can fit in a sentence, but one verb is the best choice.

General VerbMore Specific VerbWhy It Is Better
gorush, stroll, dashtells us how the person moves
eatmunch, nibble, gobbletells us how the person eats
sayshout, whisper, mumbletells us how the person speaks
lookstare, glance, peektells us how the person looks

Key Rules

  1. An action verb shows what someone does: If you can act it out, it is an action verb. Try acting out "skip" or "pour" -- you can do it!
  2. Pick the verb that matches the action: "The cat scratches the post" is better than "The cat touches the post" because scratching tells us more.
  3. One sentence, one main action verb: "She throws the ball" has one action verb. Find it by asking, "What does she do?"
  4. Action verbs change with the subject: With he, she, or it, add -s or -es. "He throws." "They throw."

Common Mistakes

WrongRightWhy
The boy threw the ball with his legs. The boy kicked the ball with his legs. You throw with your hands, not your legs; "kicked" is correct
She bites the soup from the bowl. She sips the soup from the bowl. You cannot bite soup; "sips" fits a liquid
He whispers across the noisy canteen. He shouts across the noisy canteen.Whispering cannot be heard in a noisy place; "shouts" fits
The cat marches up the tree. The cat climbs up the tree.Cats do not march; "climbs" is the right action for a tree

Clue Words

Ask yourself these questions to find the right action verb:

What is the person doing? How is the person doing it? What body part is being used?

Words that tell you an action is happening:

quickly, slowly, loudly, softly, carefully, suddenly

These words often come after action verbs. If you see them, look for the action verb nearby.

  • "She runs quickly."
  • "He whispers softly."

Tip: If you cannot decide which verb to use, try acting out each choice. The verb that matches the action best is the right one!

Practice Tips

  1. Act it out: Read the sentence and try to do the action. Does the verb match what you are doing? If not, pick a better verb.
  2. Ask "How?": If the sentence says "She walks slowly," think of a verb that already means walking slowly. "She strolls" is even better!
  3. Group your verbs: Sort new verbs into groups like hands, mouth, body, and eyes. This helps you remember more verbs.
