Primary 1Nouns

Possessive Nouns (P1) (Primary 1)

Singular possessive 's (the cat's tail, Ben's bag, my mother's name)

Possessive Nouns

A possessive noun shows that something belongs to a person, animal, or thing. We add 's to the noun to show ownership.

What You'll Learn

  • How to show that something belongs to one person, animal, or thing by adding 's
  • How to use possessive nouns in sentences

When to Use

  1. When something belongs to a person: "That is Ben's bag."
  2. When something belongs to an animal: "The cat's tail is long."
  3. When something belongs to a family member: "My mother's name is Sarah."

How to Form

To show that something belongs to one person, animal, or thing, add 's to the owner's name or noun.

Owner+ 'sPossessive FormWhat belongs to them
the cat+ 'sthe cat'sthe cat's tail
Ben+ 'sBen'sBen's bag
my mother+ 'smy mother'smy mother's name
the dog+ 'sthe dog'sthe dog's bone
my father+ 'smy father'smy father's car
the bird+ 'sthe bird'sthe bird's nest

Remember: Owner + 's + the thing that belongs to them!

Key Rules

  1. Add 's to the owner: Put 's after the person, animal, or thing that owns something. "This is Ali's pencil."
  2. The owner comes first: The owner always comes before the thing. "The dog's bowl" means the bowl belongs to the dog.
  3. Do not mix up plurals and possessives: Adding -s makes a noun plural (many cats). Adding 's shows ownership (the cat's toy).

Clue Words

Words that tell you something belongs to someone:

belongs to, of, owner, has

  • "The tail of the cat" is the same as "the cat's tail."
  • "The pen that belongs to Mei Ling" is the same as "Mei Ling's pen."

Tip: Ask yourself: "Who does it belong to?" Put that person or animal first, add 's, then say the thing.

Practice Tips

  1. Ask "Whose is it?": Read the sentence. Find the thing. Ask "Whose is it?" The answer is the owner. Add 's to the owner.
  2. Point and say: Point at things at home. Say "That is Mum's cup" or "That is my sister's toy." Practise using 's every day.
