Common word pairs (big/small, happy/sad); choosing synonyms in sentences

Synonyms & Antonyms

Words can be friends or opposites! Synonyms are words that mean the same thing or almost the same thing. Antonyms are words that mean the opposite.

What You'll Learn

  • What antonyms are and how to spot words with opposite meanings
  • How to choose the right synonym to complete a sentence

When to Use

  1. When you want to say the same thing in a different way: "The boy is happy." means the same as "The boy is glad."
  2. When you want to say the opposite: "The bag is heavy." The opposite is "The bag is light."
  3. When a question asks for a word with the same meaning: "Which word means the same as big? The answer is large."
  4. When a question asks for a word with the opposite meaning: "Which word is the opposite of hot? The answer is cold."

Key Rules

  1. Synonyms are not always exactly the same: "Big" and "large" are very close, but "big" sounds more casual and "large" sounds a bit more formal. For P2, both are correct.
  2. Antonyms are exact opposites: If something is hot, the opposite is cold -- not "warm". Pick the word that is the most opposite.
  3. Read the whole sentence first: Before choosing a synonym, read the sentence to make sure the word fits. "She began to cry." The synonym is "started", not "opened".
  4. One word can have more than one antonym: "Old" can mean the opposite of "young" (for people) or "new" (for things). The sentence tells you which one to pick.

Tip: If the question says "same meaning", look for a synonym. If the question says "opposite meaning", look for an antonym. The question always tells you which one to find!

Practice Tips

  1. Try swapping the word: Put the answer word into the sentence. Does it still make sense? If yes, it is a good synonym. "The cat is big." Try "The cat is large." -- yes, it works!
  2. Think of opposites in pairs: Learn antonyms as pairs -- big/small, happy/sad, hot/cold. When you see one word, the opposite should come to mind right away.
  3. Use the sentence as a helper: The words around the blank help you choose the right synonym. "She felt very ___ when she lost her toy." The sentence is about losing something, so the answer is a sad word, not a happy word.
