Similes
A simile is a way to describe something by comparing it to something else using the words as or like.
What You'll Learn
In this lesson, you will learn:
- What a simile is and how it makes your sentences more interesting
- Common similes that use "as ___ as" (e.g., as brave as a lion)
- How to pick the right simile to describe people, animals, and things
When to Use
- Describing how someone acts: "My brother is as brave as a lion."
- Describing how something looks: "The snow is as white as milk."
- Describing how someone feels: "She was as happy as a lark."
- Making your writing fun: "The baby sleeps like a log."
How to Form
"As ___ As" Similes
Most similes for P2 follow this pattern:
| Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Full Simile |
|---|---|---|---|
| as | brave (word) | as a lion | as brave as a lion |
| as | quiet (word) | as a mouse | as quiet as a mouse |
| as | busy (word) | as a bee | as busy as a bee |
| as | slow (word) | as a snail | as slow as a snail |
| as | fast (word) | as lightning | as fast as lightning |
Pattern
as + describing word + as + something well known
The describing word tells us what quality you mean. The thing after the second "as" is something that everyone knows has that quality.
Key Rules
- Use "as ... as": A simile needs the word as before and after the describing word. "She is as quiet as a mouse."
- Pick the right match: The animal or thing must really have that quality. We say "as slow as a snail" because snails are very slow.
- A simile is not the real thing: When we say "He is as brave as a lion," we do not mean he is a lion. We mean he is very brave, like a lion is.
- Do not mix similes: Use one simile at a time. Do not say "as brave as a lion and as tall as a giraffe" in the same sentence.
Common Mistakes
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| He is brave as a lion. | He is as brave as a lion. | You need "as" before the describing word too |
| She is as quiet like a mouse. | She is as quiet as a mouse. | Use "as ... as", not "as ... like" |
| The boy is as slow as a cheetah. | The boy is as slow as a snail. | A cheetah is fast, not slow -- pick the right match |
| He is as brave as the lion. | He is as brave as a lion. | Use "a" (any lion), not "the" (a specific lion) |
Clue Words
Words that tell you a simile is being used:
as ... as, like
Common "as ___ as" similes to remember:
- as brave as a lion -- very brave
- as quiet as a mouse -- very quiet
- as busy as a bee -- very busy
- as slow as a snail -- very slow
- as fast as lightning -- very fast
- as light as a feather -- very light
- as strong as an ox -- very strong
- as white as snow -- very white

Tip: Think of the word after the last "as" like a picture. If you say "as busy as a bee," picture a bee buzzing around flowers all day. That picture helps you remember the simile!
Practice Tips
- Picture it: When you see a simile, draw a picture in your mind. "As quiet as a mouse" -- imagine a tiny mouse tiptoeing. This helps you remember what the simile means.
- Match the quality: Ask yourself, "Is this animal or thing really known for this quality?" A snail is slow. A cheetah is fast. Make sure they match!
- Spot the pattern: Look for "as ___ as" in sentences. If you see it, you have found a simile.
- Try writing your own: Pick something you want to describe, think of an animal or thing that has the same quality, and write "as _ as _."
