Articles
Articles are words that come before nouns. You already know how to use a, an, and the. Now you will learn when to use no article at all -- this is called the zero article.
What You'll Learn
- How to choose between "the" (definite) and "a/an" (indefinite) in longer sentences
- When to leave out the article completely (zero article)
- Tricky cases where the wrong article changes the meaning
When to Use
- A specific thing everyone knows: "Let's go to the library after school." (There is one library you both know about.)
- Any one of something: "I need a ruler for my Maths lesson." (Any ruler will do.)
- General groups -- no article: "Dolphins are intelligent animals." (All dolphins in general, so no article.)
- Meals, sports, and subjects -- no article: "We have lunch at twelve o'clock." (No article before meal names.)
How to Form
Choosing the Right Article
| Situation | Article | Example |
|---|---|---|
| A specific noun both people know | the | Please return the book to the shelf. |
| Something mentioned for the first time | a / an | My neighbour has a parrot. |
| The only one of its kind | the | The principal spoke at assembly. |
| Plural nouns in general | -- (none) | Tigers live in forests. |
| Uncountable nouns in general | -- (none) | Rice is a staple food in Singapore. |
| Proper nouns (names) | -- (none) | Mei Ling goes to school by MRT. |
Zero Article Categories
These categories do not take an article when used in a general sense:
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Meals | breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper |
| Sports and games | football, badminton, chess |
| School subjects | English, Maths, Science, Art |
| Languages | Chinese, Malay, Tamil, English |
| Days and months | Monday, January, March |
| Proper nouns (people and places) | Singapore, Sentosa, Orchard Road |
Key Rules
- Use "the" for shared knowledge: If the listener already knows which noun you mean, use "the". "Pass me the scissors on the table."
- Use "a/an" for first mention: The first time you bring up a noun, use "a" or "an". "I read a book yesterday." When you mention it again, switch to "the". "The book was about dinosaurs."
- Use zero article for general plurals: When you talk about a whole group in general, leave out the article. "Cats are good pets." But if you mean specific ones, add "the". "The cats in my neighbourhood are noisy."
- Use zero article for uncountable nouns in general: "Water is important for our health." But if you mean a specific amount, use "the". "The water in this bottle is cold."
- Use "the" with superlatives and ordinals: "She is the tallest girl in class." "He finished the first question quickly."
Common Mistakes
| Wrong | Right | Why |
|---|---|---|
| I like the ice cream. | I like ice cream. | Talking about ice cream in general -- use zero article |
| Dogs are the loyal animals. | Dogs are loyal animals. | General statement about all dogs -- no "the" |
| We had the dinner at home. | We had dinner at home. | Meal names do not take an article |
| She is best singer in the choir. | She is the best singer in the choir. | Superlatives always need "the" |
| I saw cat at the park. | I saw a cat at the park. | First mention of a singular countable noun needs "a" |
Clue Words
Use "the" when you see:
same, only, first, second, last, next, best, worst, tallest, most, right, left
Use "a/an" when you see:
there is, there was, I need, I want, one day, any (with a singular noun)
Use zero article when you see:
general statements, plural nouns not pointing to a specific group, meal names, sport names, school subjects
Tip: If you can replace the noun with "all [noun] in the world" and the sentence still makes sense, you probably need the zero article. "I like music" means "I like all music in the world" -- no article needed.
Practice Tips
- The Specificity Test: Ask yourself, "Am I talking about one specific thing, or things in general?" Specific = "the". General plural or uncountable = no article.
- The First-Second Mention Rule: First time you mention something, use "a/an". Every time after that, use "the". Read your sentences in order and check.
- The Category Check: Is the noun a meal, sport, subject, language, or proper name? If yes, you probably do not need an article.
- Read Aloud: Read the sentence out loud. If "a", "an", or "the" sounds strange, try removing the article or switching to a different one.
